A slab leak is a pipe leak under or inside the concrete floor. The water often spreads sideways under flooring and up into wall bottoms, so the damage can be well along before a stain or a smell gives it away. Soil and foundation conditions differ from lot to lot, so the path the water took is found with meters rather than assumed.
Signs worth checking
- Floors that feel damp or warm in one area
- A water bill or meter that climbs with taps off
- Laminate or wood that cups or lifts at the edges
- Baseboards that stain or swell near an outside wall
- A musty smell in a room with no visible water
Floor damp, warm or lifting with no spill? Call and describe it, and the crew will explain how a hidden leak is traced.
Call about the hidden leakFinding the wet path
A plumber locates the leak, and the drying crew uses moisture meters to follow the water through flooring, baseboards and drywall. Each Mascotte water meter carries a leak detector component, so a meter that keeps moving with the house shut down is a useful clue before anyone cuts anything.
Drying a slab house
Flooring is lifted where readings show trapped water, then air movers and dehumidifiers dry the slab surface and wall bottoms. Concrete releases moisture slowly, so drying can take longer than a surface spill. Read more on structural drying in Mascotte.
If the water also reached cabinets, see appliance and supply hose leaks.
